Flag Football Plays for Kids

Updated August 2026 · A ChalkNFilm coaching guide

Coaching youth flag football is a different job than coaching adults. Kids need plays that are simple to remember, give everyone a chance to touch the ball, and produce quick wins that keep them excited. These plays are built for 6–12 year olds and work in almost every youth league.

Keep it to 4–5 plays

Young players can't hold ten plays in their head. Pick four or five, name them something fun and memorable, and rep them until every kid knows exactly where to go. A team that runs five plays perfectly beats a team that runs fifteen plays halfway every time.

1. The Quick Pitch

Snap the ball and immediately pitch it wide to a runner with a blocker in front. It gets your fastest, most confident athlete the ball in space and doesn't rely on a hard throw. A perfect first play to build confidence.

2. The Slant

Receiver runs straight for three steps, then angles toward the middle. Short, fast, and high-percentage. Teach kids to catch it in stride and keep running. This is the single most valuable route a young player can learn.

3. The Streak (Go Route)

One receiver just runs as fast as they can straight down the field. Every kid can run this, and against youth defenses it hits for a touchdown more often than you'd think. Great for your fastest player.

4. The Hook

Receiver runs about five yards, stops, and turns around for the ball. It teaches timing and gives your quarterback an easy, reliable target when the streak isn't open.

5. The Center Sneak (where legal)

A simple designed run up the middle after a quick fake. Fun for the kids, and it keeps the defense honest so your pass plays stay open.

Show kids the play instead of describing it.

ChalkNFilm lets you draw a play and animate the routes so young players actually see where to run — right on your phone at practice.
